Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an amazing and effective healing technique that, like other Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) modalities, focuses on balance. Acupuncture utilizes the body’s own energy or Qi (Chi) to maintain health. When Qi is not balanced, is blocked or stagnant in the body, this results in pain or disease. To preform acupuncture very small needles are inserted into acupuncture points that are found on the body along Meridian lines where Qi flows. Acupuncture serves to maintain and restore those pathways to keep Qi flowing smoothly which results in optimal health. This ancient Chinese practice can be utilized to maintain health and prevent disease, treat pain, reduce inflammation, strengthen the immune system and much more!

Acupuncture sessions at home are typically well tolerated and are a very relaxing, positive experience for pets. We offer dry needle sessions, aquapuncture and electroacupuncture services. Dr. McKerney likes owners to be involved in the treatment process when possible. This might involve sitting with your pet or giving them treats during the session. Sessions typically last from 30-60 minutes. The first 3-4 treatments are usually scheduled weekly, and you can expect to see an improvement in your pet within 6-8 sessions. Chronic conditions often require more sessions to see initial improvement. For older patients with chronic conditions treatment goals are often to maintain function for as long as possible. This often requires a multi-modal approach to their care including consistent acupuncture treatments. The specific interval is variable and patient specific. Many senior patients, once stable, benefit from acupuncture sessions every 2-8 weeks.

Dr. McKerney is a certified veterinary acupuncturist through the Chi Institute with more than 10 years of experience treating animals with acupuncture. After an initial consult she will be able to make recommendations about acupuncture treatments for your pets needs and provide an individualized care plan that includes both short and long term goals and plans for your pet.
